University of Edinburgh

MSc in Film, Exhibition and Curation

University degrees: Postgraduate

Develop an informed, individual and authoritative curatorial voice in a supportive, creative and collaborative environment.

This one-year, full-time taught Masters programme combines rigorous critical thinking with experiments in creative practice, deepening your understanding of film and the ways in which it communicates with many audiences.  The programme can also be completed part-time over two years.

As a Film, Exhibition and Curation student, you’ll explore a series of approaches to the often neglected consideration of film’s movements and migrations within the context of the rich and varied festival, gallery, archive and exhibition cultures of Scotland, the UK and beyond.

You’ll work on imaginative curatorial projects, both independently and collaboratively, including with industry partners. Assignments range from pitches to programming, and you’ll be assessed in ways that support you in producing experimental work and discovering yourself as a reflective professional.

Our students come from a range of backgrounds and have gone on to careers across film exhibition and curation, in cultural mediation, in communications, research, and the arts, forming a connected international graduate community of engaged professionals. As the programme matures, this has led to a number of collaborations, both between alumni, and between current and former students.

The study of film can tell us so much not about the nature of the art of film, and about entertainment, but also about our habitat, and sense of fun and desire, how our cities work and our culture flows and inspires, and how the film industry delivers.  It’s brilliant that the University of Edinburgh is offering this relevant, insightful programme.

Mark Cousins. Director, writer, curator, filmmaker, producer and film critic.Mark is one of a number of professionals to have addressed our students as a visiting speaker.

Why study for an MSc in Film, Exhibition and Curation in Edinburgh?

One of the first universities in the world to offer a programme of study in this field, Edinburgh is pioneering in its development of an active learning and teaching environment for the study of film, exhibition and curation.

Study with us and you’ll be part of a close-knit, international community of film enthusiasts under the guidance of two dedicated Programme Directors who combine industry experience with teaching excellence, gaining them multiple Teaching Awards nominations. Our School is a highly creative environment in which you’ll also meet students of Film, Creative Writing, Playwriting, Theatre and Performance Studies, literatures, and many languages.

Based in a world-renowned festival city, bursting with independent cinemas, galleries and venues, we host visiting professionals throughout the year, and regularly collaborate with two of the UK’s largest film festivals, the Glasgow Film Festival and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. We also have excellent links with Screen Academy Scotland, and with a range of other industry partners in Scotland, the UK and internationally. For example, previous students have been placed, or won internships, in Cannes, Chicago, New York, and London.

You’ll leave with a portfolio of projects that demonstrates both rigorous academic and professional skills, as well as your ability to work independently and with others. Previously awarded the Students’ Association’s Teaching Award for Developing Student Employability, we were one of the early contributors to ‘Making the Most of Masters’, a cross-university initiative which won the Times Higher Education Award for Outstanding Employer Engagement.

Where this programme might take you

Career opportunities for Film, Exhibition and Curation graduates.

This programme focuses on imaginative and practical projects and placements, so you’ll graduate with a portfolio that demonstrates both rigorous academic and professional skills, as well as your ability to work independently and with others.

Our graduates have gone on to secure a range of different professional placings in film, exhibition and curation, many developing highly mobile, international, independent curatorial careers taking them to festivals, and other projects, around the world. As the programme matures, this has led to a number of collaborations, both between alumni, and between current and former students.

You might choose to use the skills you develop on this programme to move into cultural mediation and communications. Some of our graduates are working in broadcast (for example at National Geographic and WGBH in the United States), while others are embedded in arts organisations and businesses, including in the emerging area of fashion film.

There are also opportunities to pursue further academic research in the growing fields of exhibition, curatorial and archive study. To date, three former students have won fully-funded scholarships in the UK to fund PhD research into film policy; experimental cinema; and film tourism.
