3D Animation

Ireland’s first Master’s degree in 3D Animation developed in association with Sheridan College Ontario.

What is it?

This course is an advanced practical programme that teaches the skills needed to excel in the world of 3D Animation. Learning in a digital studio environment from lecturers and practitioners who are active in industry, you will get technical and production skills plus a thorough critical understanding of the modern animation landscape. This is a shared MA programme with Sheridan College Ontario and welcomes Irish, Canadian and international students to the full programme.

What will I do?

Students will get the opportunity to develop a range of practical and critical skills necessary for 3D animation production. It is a practical course for those who wish to focus on new skills and hone their existing abilities. Students will also develop individual skills and the leadership qualities needed for the contemporary media landscape.

What modules will I study?

Students will achieve their learning outcomes through practical work ranging from team productions to individual exercises across a range of technical and project-based modules.

Who can apply?

This course is open to holders of an undergraduate qualification of 2nd Class Honours (GPA 2.75) or higher in Animation or a visual, fine art or design related programme.

Applicants without a degree may be considered provided they can demonstrate Honours Degree equivalence which can be verified through the Recognition of Prior Learning process.

  • You must submit a portfolio of your work (see guidelines).
  • You may be asked to attend an interview (online).

Applicants with English as a second language must demonstrate a competency in English.

Canadian Applicants

If you hold a Postgraduate Certificate in Computer Animation from Sheridan College, Ontario you are eligible to apply for a MA in Animation at IADT. Your study at Sheridan will be recognised as equivalent to the first two semesters of the MA programme.

To complete the MA you will be required to take a 7-week (42 hour) course in Research Methods for Creative Practices (in Canada or Ireland) and participate in the final term (15 weeks) at IADT’s Dublin campus. Your research may take you to another country subject to approval.

Future Careers

Professional pathways leading from the MA programme exist in the animation, game and other screen industries. Graduate employment opportunities exist in all levels of the animation industry, including: character animation, lighting, rigging and world creation.

When do classes take place?

Classes begin in September and run for three terms (approx. 18 months). The MA is full-time, comprising four full days per week, and combining classroom teaching with independent study.
