Basic Characteristics of the Master Program

The Master’s study program is linked to the Bachelor’s study program completed at FAMU, other AMU faculties or other universities/colleges.

Therefore, eligible applicants for admission in the Master’s study program at FAMU include:

  • Students in the 3rd year of the Bachelor’s study programs of all FAMU courses who wish to continue in the ensuing Master’s program immediately upon completing the Bachelor’s state examinations;
  • Graduates from the Bachelor’s study programs in all FAMU courses who have passed the Bachelor’s state examinations in the preceding years;
  • Graduates from at least the Bachelor’s study programs at other AMU faculties or other universities/colleges in the Czech Republic or abroad.The standard length of study based on the accreditation of the subsequent Master’s study program is two years (three years in the case of the Cinema and Digital Media program). The subsequent Master’s study program is completed with a final state Master’s examination and the granting of the “Master of Arts” (MgA) academic degree.

    The specific requirements for admission to individual study programs of the individual Departments form a part of this declaration of admission procedure terms and conditions.

    The master’s degree study in photography in English is intended for applicants who already have a bachelor’s degree or will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in the current academic year. Applicants who have not studied photography under a bachelor’s degree programme may also apply. Deep interest and experience in photography and visual arts are expected. The programme is designed to deepen and interconnect knowledge and practice in the field of photography, new media and technical image. In the first year, students study in specialized studios and their knowledge is made profound in four thematic cycles. In the second year of their study, students prepare for the final state exam. The objective of the study is to prepare future artists for their own artistic activities and work on specialized projects in the field of art and artistic research.

    Prerequisites for the study:

    Students’ own work in the field of photography and technical image
    Graduation with a bachelor’s degree during the academic year in which the applicant applies at the latest

    6 Certified bachelor’s degree diploma with a translation of courses taken. Unless the documents are in Czech or English, please provide these documents with a certified translation.
    If you are going to take the bachelor’s degree exam in this academic year, replace the diploma with your university’s confirmation, providing the date on which you will take the final exam.

    Step 2

    Portfolio

    Your portfolio must be sent in a printed form by 7 April 2020 to the same address :

    and must include the following mandatory parts:

    Part A: Set of exhibition photos, consisting of 8-12 photographs of a maximum size of 50 × 60 cm.
    Part B: Artist’s maquette of a photographic publication or a book
    Part C: Series of 8-20 photographs or intermedia works

    Intermedia project: a video project (maximum length of 8 minutes), documentation of your own exhibition, sculptures or objects); to be provided on a flash drive in the following formats: video MP 4, picture documentation jpg.)

    Part D:
    4 Masters Project Proposal which includes:
    – The applicant’s letter of intent to study photography
    – The applicant’s basic idea about their Final Master Study Programme Work (both photographic and theoretical)
    – A choice of the studio where the applicant wants to study – Studio of Classic Photography, Inter-media Studio, Studio of Documentary Photography, Studio of Imaginative Photography, Studio of Photography and New Media
    – The applicant’s letter of intent to study photography

    Please note:
    Individual mandatory parts must be clearly separated from each other; placed in separate envelopes and marked with serial numbers on the back
    Individual photographs must not be repeated in different parts.

    Step 3

    Upon receipt of your portfolio, we will inform you in detail about the further course of the admission procedure by messages sent to the e-mail address provided by you.

    General rules:
    The 1st round of the admission procedure will take place without the presence of applicants on 20 April 2020. A committee, consisting of at least 5 teachers of the Department of Photography, evaluates the portfolio by giving points to each part in accordance with the evaluation rules. The fulfilment of the obligatory point limit determines whether the applicant proceeds to the second round of the admission procedure. .
    You will be informed of whether you have proceeded to the second round of the admission procedure by e-mail.
    The 2nd round of the admission procedure will take place on 30 April 2020
    It includes the following mandatory parts:

    A test of general knowledge of history and theory of photography and visual art
    A conceptual task on a given topic which you will receive after having met the conditions of the first round
    An interview with the applicant during which you will explain your intent related to the portfolio you have submitted and other parts of the admission procedure.
    The second round of the admission procedure is evaluated by giving the points by a committee consisting of at least 5 teachers of the Department of Photography which, based on a specified number of points reached, gives the dean a proposal for the applicant to be admitted to study at the Department of Photography.

    Step 4

    Admission/non admission to the study
    Notification of the results of the admission procedure:
    All applicants will be informed about the results of the admission procedure by an e-mail sent by the Study Department.

    Note:
    Applicants that have not been admitted can pick up their portfolio within the two months that follow. The school does not send the portfolios back. Admitted applicants leave their portfolios at school for the period of one academic year.

    Please note that, in order to enrol in the master’s programme for academic year 2020/2021, you will need to provide a recognition of foreign education certificate by 1 October 2020. For further information about the procedure please visit https://www.famu.cz/cs/studium/studijni-oddeleni/recognition-foreign-education/. We will be of assistance after your arrival.

    Accommodation, Health Insurance and Visa are not provided by FAMU. The capacity of the school dormitory is very limited. FAMU provides accepted students with an Admission Letter, which serves as one of the required visa application documents.
