Character Animation and Animated Filmmaking – Master of Arts

Target audience

  • Bachelor level in animated filmmaking and/or 3 years of professional experience in the field
  • No age limit
  • Prerequisite skills: 2D and 3D animation, in modeling and 3D rendering, design and background, color, storyboard or character design, proficiency in compositing with After Effects, animation with TV Paint, Animate, Toon Boom, Maya, ability to work in teams. Solid level in english.

Aptitudes

  • Open minded and with solid general and artistic knowledge.
  • Ability to work in a team.
  • Advanced level of English.

Presentation

This English-language two-year cycle enables students to enter the GOBELINS curriculum for a Master conceived to reach a professional level notably in directing, storytelling and intercultural competence.

In addition to exercises in writing, storyboard and complex animation (mixed techniques, interacting characters), students participate in an open-themed end of studies film in conditions that simulate a professional environment.

Course contents

  • Advanced courses in character animation 2D and 3D
  • Scripting and direction methodology, dividing the fi lm into sequences, character definition and characterization, graphic design, sound design, storyboarding
  • Filmmaking: 2D and/or 3D layout, character and background modeling, setup, skinning, rigging, acting, character and special e ects animation, rendering, compositing
  • Complying with specifi tions, choice of production pipeline according to technical and artistic choices, assessing and monitoring production planning
  • Teaching is centered on teamwork
  • During the master, teams will be encouraged to mix with students from the Character Animation and Animated Filmmaking programs in French

 

Projects:

  • Production, in multicultural groups, of an end-of studies short film
  • Written report on a reflective work related to an experimental project
  • Strengthen technical and artistic skills in 2D and 3D animation (in particular character animation)
  • Command of storytelling, writing, storyboarding, all pre-production and 2D and 3D animated films
  • Production of a making of, demo reel, graphic portofolio…
  • Students benefit from tailored follow-up
  • Equipements: HD and 3D equipped movie theatre, professional sound studio, multi-layer animation stands. Each student has a dedicated workstation. Led animation tables, Cintiqs
  • GOBELINS is a member of RECA (the French Animation School Network) and of IPAX (the US network of school recognized by Sony Pictures)
  • High-level faculty members, professionals coming from well-established studios
  • International mindset necessary to gain skills required to work on multicultural projects / multicultural contextes (courses and conferences in french and in english)
  • Participation in two speed-recruiting events organized specifically for the last year GOBELINS students: one in Paris in March, the other during the Annecy festival in June (more than 50 companies participate)
