Industry Certificate: Script Assessment

University degrees: Online Courses

Course length: 30 Mar 2020 - 07 Jun 2020

Course city: Online

This twelve week, part-time course is designed to train you to think analytically and critically about screenwriting and stories, within the current market context. You will learn the practical skills to begin working in script assessment and development roles within the Australian screen industry.

You’ll be introduced to the common principles that underpin successful screenwriting, investigate some of the approaches to developing film and television that exist within our industry, and learn how to apply those skills to story analysis. The course will focus primarily on how to think critically about screenwriting, in all forms, and how to turn that analysis into useful feedback. Course participants will learn how to write effective Script Coverage for an employer, Script Assessments for a Funding Agency and write script notes to provide guidance for a Producer or Screenwriter.

Taught by Christopher Sharp, who has significant recent experience working in script assessment and development, the course will also feature a number of industry guests.

Learn to evaluate a screenplay and deliver effective script notes for a feature film, television series, or short form work to share with the producer or writer of the work.

Get the skills to write script coverage in a short turnaround time, with commercially focused feedback.

Practise writing correctly formatted Script Assessment reports for a state funding agency.

Is the Industry Certificate: Script Assessment right for you?

To be successful in Script Development or Assessment you need to be able to recognise writing talent, while at the same time apply your industry knowledge of what works for audiences and what the market is looking for. In reading a screenplay for the first time, an Assessor or Developer will both assess the market potential and consider ways in which the story can be improved.

You must have experience with storytelling to get the most from this course as there will be an assumed level of knowledge in relation to storytelling and writing. It is suitable for practitioners who have screenwriting experience, for creative producers, authors, playwrights and development executives with industry exposure.

By the end of the course, participants who have successfully completed all assessments will have the tools to take on junior level development roles, work as a freelance script assessor, or apply the knowledge acquired during the course to their own work within the screen industry.

If you have no industry experience or exposure we suggest you complete some practical screenwriting courses before thinking about this course.

This course is only open to 18+.
