Certificate Research Methods for the Creative Practices

University degrees: Courses

Course length: 12 weeks from late September 2019 Friday mornings

Course city: Dublin

Develop unique research skills needed for creative disciplines.

What is it?

Professional practice qualifies as research when it can be shown to be firmly located within a research context, to be subject to interrogation and critical review and to impact on or influence the work of peers, policy and practice. This course will allow learners to develop practice based and or practice led research skills and to apply them to a relevant creative discipline. The course will provide you with the ability to conduct informed independent research in an interdisciplinary context shaped by the most recent and contemporary debates within your own specific discipline area or area of expertise.

What will I do?

Internationally the norm has been to describe postgraduate research in which an artefact is the outcome as ‘practice-based’, while postgraduate research which interrogates methods, methodologies, theoretical frameworks of practice with the outcome being a thesis and an artefact as ‘practice-led’. This course will prepare you for both. Having formulated a topic for enquiry, you will then synthesise a range of research skills and methodologies allowing you to expand and deepen your approach to a creative practice.

What modules will I study?

This is a single module certificate.

It supports MA by research students focused on a creative discipline and is integral to related taught MA programmes.

Who can apply?

This course is suitable for students who have an undergraduate qualification of 2nd Class Honours or higher at Honours Degree level.

Applicants without a Level 8 qualification may be considered provided they can demonstrate Honours Degree equivalence which can be verified through the RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process.

Two references must support your application. You may be asked to attend an interview.

Future Careers

This certificate will help creative practitioners or active researchers in a creative discipline to develop the skills needed for interdisciplinary research in the creative practices.
