The Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies is an 80 credit point program designed to provide graduates in the visual arts discipline with the opportunity to undertake advanced study in research methodology and to undertake supervised research work in the discipline area appropriate to their research trajectory.

The program provides the necessary preparation for entry into a higher degree research program (Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) or equivalent program) for applicants who do not possess the required qualifications for direct admission into these programs. The program will also be available to students who wish to undertake advanced studies in the identified disciplinary fields but who may not wish to progress to MPhil or PhD study.

Students may choose to exit the Graduate Diploma program (after successfully completing the specified courses) with the Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts Research Studies.

Attendance information

The Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies will be offered full-time and part-time and on-campus at South Bank.

Students enrolling in the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies will be required to complete coursework and a dissertation.

Coursework: Courses are all on- campus.

Dissertation: During enrolment in the dissertation component of this program, it will be expected that students will be able to work independently for most of the time. Students will be required to confer regularly with their supervisors and it is recommended that students discuss on-campus attendance requirements with their supervisors prior to the start of the dissertation.

If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

Pathways to further study

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies (and have achieved a GPA of 5.0 or higher with a grade of 5 or higher in the dissertation component) will be eligible for admission into the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) program subject to fulfilment of requirements for candidature as specified in the Higher Degree Research policy and successful completion of the confirmation procedure.

Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies (and have achieved a GPA of 5.5 or higher with a grade of 6 or higher in the dissertation component) will be eligible for admission into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program subject to fulfilment of requirements for candidature as specified in the Higher Degree Research policy and successful completion of the confirmation procedure.

Fees

International students

An International student is one who is not:

  • an Australian or New Zealand citizen or
  • a person who has Australian permanent resident status.
Indicative annual tuition fee

The indicative annual tuition fee is calculated based on a standard full-time study load which is usually 80 credit points (two full-time trimesters).

The indicative annual tuition fee is based on current conditions and available data and should only be used as a guide. These fees are reviewed annually and are subject to change.

Tuition fees
  • An International student pays tuition fees.
  • Students are liable for tuition fees for the courses they are enrolled in as at the census date.
  • The tuition fee for students who commence their program prior to 2014 is charged according to the approved program fee for the trimester in which the student commenced the program.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts Research Studies, a student must:

  • hold an undergraduate degree in a related discipline from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing) with a minimum GPA of 5.0 (using a 7.0 point scale) over the last two years of the Bachelor degree
  • OR hold a Masters degree in a related discipline from a recognised University (or another tertiary education institution of equivalent standing).

As a condition of acceptance into the program, students will be required to find a suitable supervisor or supervisors and have their research project approved by the supervisor(s) and the Program Director. Students requiring assistance in finding a suitable supervisor should contact a HDR Convenor in that discipline. The supervisor(s) will be responsible for assessing and recommending applications for admission into the program and plans for programs of study, and will act as the nominated student contact for any concerns and issues that arise in their study. The Program Director will have final approval for admissions into the program.
